I would like to whole heatedly recommend Jesse. I am a 45 year old Caucasian male with the flexibility of an ironing board and before starting on Jesse’s classes a year ago suffered lower back pains and general stiffness. Having now attended Jesse’s lunch time class at the Hidden Gym I can now wiggle my hips, have a good idea as to what an open and closed position should feel like and have learnt some great stretches to pull my back in to shape after a game of squash or tennis. Jesse has a great way in describing where you should be and where you are trying to get to. I have yet to leave a 45 minute class feeling un-stretched or having identified another body-area that I had not appreciated does not flex when it should. I hope to continue on my path to touching in the floor with straight legged aplomb and sitting on the floor with a straighter back. Very many thanks.

In Jesse’s acroyoga classes, teachers and learners alike share their skills, inspire curiosity and confidence, and build trust and camaraderie. Our efforts and “work” are fueled by laughter and playfulness. Jesse has a gift to create a unique learning environment where one gives, receives, and witnesses support all around – be it literal, physical support; a comment from someone with a different perspective; or a spontaneous celebration for a new achievement.

Jesse’s teaching and learning are driven by his genuine curiosity about the physical form and movement. He has both remarkable intuition as well as years of study and practice in the complexities of strength, stability, balance, and flow. This scholarship shines through in his teaching and his acrobatic performances. It is also clearly evident in his generous, therapeutic touch.

With the promise of a full body tone up and a confidence boost, Rachel Liddle puts the latest twist on yoga to the test

I admit it: yoga bunny material I am not. The thought of holding my foot behind my head in a five-minute stretch comes pretty low on my list of ‘exercises to burn off that extra slice of cake’. Plus, being as flexible as a twig, it also comes low on my list of things l’m actually able to do.

So when Top Sante asked me to try out the latest class that combines yoga with a little acrobatics and a good dose of Thai massage, I was more than a little apprehensive. Nevertheless, I headed to The Place dance studio in central London to give a two hour acroyoga class a go.

This fusion of disciplines comes from San Fransisco where, eight years ago, two yoga practitioners experimented with play poses, such as supporting the other in a handstand, on his own hand. Et voila: acroyoga was born. Now, there are 120 instructors worldwide.

Calming my nerves, one of the instructors, Jaqui, reassures me I’m not the only beginner in the 16 strong class. We start with a sequence of typical Yoga poses, such as the plank. There are two instructors taking the class, and the second, Jesse, goes around helping people get into the positions. Transitions between the moves is quick and interspersed with push-ups and even the odd handstand by the seasoned attendees, to get your body ready for the next phase.

It soon becomes clear that a key part of acroyoga is working hands-on with your classmates and trusting them. Worryingly, some of them were unlucky enough to have to trust me as I ‘spot’ them to ensure they don’t crash to the floor. It’s difficult – I only manage to hold a pose for a second or two – but each time I feel a little improvement.

Next is the therapeutic part of the class called flying. To demonstrate, Jesse holds Jaqui up in the air using the soles of his feet and her balance. As they try handstands, and a host of other complex poses, my heart sinks – l’m supposed to do that? Thankfully, we are split into two groups: l’m with the beginners, while the rest test out the full sequence themselves. They’re laughing and chatting as they copy the moves. Meanwhile, l’m nervously using just my partner Valentina’s feet for support – who, incidentally, looks even more terrified than me. But with each attempt I feel more confident, and in 15 minutes, l’m also’flying’, balancing in the air on just Valentina’s feet. Yes, it’s scary, but you also get an amazing sense of achievement.

The session winds down with the more experienced students flying the rest of us, leaving me draped over one of the instructor’s legs for my favourite part, the massage.

It’s a friendly ciass and l’m eager to discover just how much more I could do with practice Leaving the studio, I feel like I am walking taller my slumped posture improved no end. I even have a bit of the positive energy l’m told comes with yoga. Perhaps I could become an acroyoga bunny after all.

I first met Jesse 4 years ago on reading an ad in the local paper to try AcroYoga to help rheumatic back problems, as I had tried many NHS and non-NHS therapies without much benefit. I was pleased I did, its been a beneficial therapeutic journey of relaxing intuitive Thai massage, amazing stretches achieved by his expert ‘flying’ AcroYoga moves all delivered in effortless technique by a very laidback Jesse (excuse the pun!). We are now progressing to body strength exercises to consolidate his treatment. I’m very grateful for his treatment and can not recommend him enough.

I am a yoga teacher and accustomed to many strenuous asnas, however I feel that Acro-Yoga offers something a little different. Jesse Saunders combines acrobatics, yoga and thai massage and it is quite simply riveting. In my sessions with Jesse I feel relaxed, meditative, elated and utterly delighted by what I am able to do. Jesse is one of those natural and gifted teachers that makes what could be perceived as difficult as easy and natural as sitting on a chair. I recommend Jesse Saunders and Acro-Yoga to the whole planet. Try it yourself and be prepared to have the time of your life.

I take two children to learn Acro-Yoga taught by Jesse Saunders. One child is 8 and the other 6 years old. I have watched in awe as the children, one with a disability, have both made truly impressive progress within a short period of time. This is largely due to Jesse Saunders, their remarkable teacher. Jesse is not only a wonderful teacher, he is also an amazing person with incredible patience, kindness and an instinctive understanding and ability to connect with children. The children cannot wait to see Jesse each week and willingly clamber onto his shoulders for the next feat that they know they can do. Teaching Acro-Yoga in the way Jesse Saunders teaches is not only giving them confidence, mind and body discipline, it is also making them extremely proud of their achievements and a belief that anything and everything is possible.

If you’re looking for your ‘average yoga class’ don’t come to Jesse! If, on the other hand – you are looking for a fresh take and want to HAVE LOTS OF FUN – then this is the class for you. Jesse focuses a lot on the spine and the various ways in which the spine can move. I have found his teaching invaluable in developing my own practice and I don’t like to miss a class if I can help it. While the practice can be quite strong in places, it is accessible to everyone and Jesse has a caring and nurturing teaching style.

I have been practicing yoga with Jesse for over 2 years. I have always struggled to take yoga classes regularly but since I have started practicing with Jesse, I never skip a class. His classes are challenging and he focuses a lot on spine movements. Jesse is enthusiastic and passionate about his teaching. His classes are infused with humour and learning even the most difficult asanas is fun with him. I always look forward to Jesse’s classes as he always introduces beautiful vinyasas and comes up with new challenging sequences. He safely guides me into postures that I have never imagined I would ever attain. In 2 years of practicing with Jesse I have gained so much strength, flexibility and confidence in doing asanas.
